As a solutions company, Weed Instrument provides more than just catalog products. Decades of nuclear applications engineering provides the perspective and experience necessary to prototype, qualify, build and deliver special design quality temperature, pressure and fiber optic networking products.
Our Nuclear Engineering teams simulate actual application environments, perform environmental testing and evaluate electrical loads. Experience has taught us which technologies and product characteristics provide the most effective solutions to our nuclear customers' measurement problems.
Nuclear engineering services available from Weed Instrument include:
Commercial Grade Dedication
This is the process of approving a "commercial quality" product for a nuclear safety-related application. While manufacturers of approved nuclear equipment will frequently qualify their own equipment, it is also possible to supply commercial quality equipment for a safety-related application via commercial grade dedication. This service can be provided by Weed Instrument and performed in accordance with EPRI NP-5652.

Environmental Qualification
Weed Instrument can qualify and supply instrumentation of various types for specific accident conditions and service lives. The environmental qualification is conducted in accordance with IEEE Std. 323 and related standards, as well as to plant specific requirements.
A typical Weed Instrument environmental qualification test program will include one or more of the following:
- Baseline functional testing
- Radiation aging
- Post radiation aging functional testing
- Thermal aging
- Post thermal aging functional testing
- Cyclic aging
- Post cyclic aging functional testing
- Seismic testing (if applicable)
- Post seismic functional testing
- Steam transient simulation
- Post steam transient functional testing and examination

Seismic Qualification
Weed Instrument can provide seismically qualified instrumentation of all types (mechanical, electrical, electronic) for most nuclear requirements. The seismic qualification is supported by comprehensive documentation (qualification plans, procedures, and reports), all of which are subject to prior customer acceptance.
Reverse Engineering
When necessary, obsolete instrumentation can be replaced with reverse-engineered equivalents. These are typically designed to be form, fit, and functionally equivalent to the original installed components, meeting or exceeding the performance requirements of the product.
Item Equivalency Evaluations, prepared by Weed Instrument in accordance with EPRI NP-6406, are used to document and evaluate any changes to the original configurations. In addition, full functional testing and commercial grade dedication in accordance with EPRI NP-5652 is performed based on the safety-related function of the instrument.
